A YouTube thumbnail is the first thing a viewer sees, before the title even registers. Getting the size or format wrong can mean a rejected upload or a blurry result.

Working from a larger source (such as 1920 × 1080px) and downscaling to 1280 × 720px at the end keeps the thumbnail sharper when it's shown enlarged, such as on a TV or a large monitor.
Making it readable at a tiny size
- Thumbnails appear at the size of a fingernail on a phone. Any text needs to fill at least a fifth of the frame to stay readable while scrolling.
- Avoid repeating the exact title text in the thumbnail. Having the thumbnail say something different from the title gives viewers two separate reasons to click.
- A face with a clear expression tends to stand out even at a small size. Placing it large, centered or on one of the thirds, is a common composition.
- YouTube overlays the video duration in the bottom-right corner in black text on a white pill. Keep anything important out of that corner.
How to do it in prezll
- Upload the photo or screenshot you want to use as a thumbnail.
- Open the Crop tool and pick the X 16:9 preset. It shares the same 16:9 ratio as a YouTube thumbnail.
- Position the crop frame so the important content avoids the bottom-right corner where the duration badge sits.
- Add large text with the Text tool. A color that contrasts with the background stays readable at a small size.
