Reducing ID Photo File Size and Editing the Background (Passport 500KB, Q-net 200KB)

Published 2026-10-29

Uploads often fail because the file is over the limit. Set the size first, then lower the JPG quality step by step, and you can shrink the file without making the face blurry.

Fitting a file-size limit

  1. Crop to the size the recipient asks for first: 413x531px for 3.5x4.5cm, 354x472px for 3x4cm.
  2. Use JPG. For photos it is far smaller than PNG.
  3. If there is room, keep the quality high; if the file is over, lower it. This tool searches for the highest quality that stays under the limit.
  4. If even the lowest quality is too large, the image is reduced a little at a time and tried again.

Limits differ by recipient. The online passport application states up to 500KB, and Q-net photo registration states up to 200KB. These were checked on the official guidance pages on 29 October 2026.

Can I change the background?

It depends where the photo goes. The passport site's online photo guidance lists photos with a non-white background, or with the background removed in an editing program so the photo looks altered, as not accepted. For a passport, do not swap the background with AI; use a photo taken in front of a white background.

The resident registration card guidance recommends no background or a white one, and Q-net lists plain-background photos as acceptable. For official submissions, keep the original background or use white.

  • For a resume or a social profile the rules are looser, so changing the background is a low risk. If the posting has its own instructions, follow them.
  • When you change the background, keep edge smoothing on so the old background color does not show around the hair.
  • If the cut-out looks unnatural, skip the change and save with the original background.

Printing at home or at a photo shop

Putting the same photo several times on one 4x6 inch print lets you print once and cut. This tool's 4x6 print sheet places 10 photos for 3x4cm or 8 photos for 3.5x4.5cm, with cutting guides between them.

  1. Pick the size and crop your photo.
  2. Press Save as 4x6 print sheet.
  3. Print the saved JPG at 4x6 size at a photo shop or kiosk.
  4. Cut along the guide lines.

For photos with a head-length rule, such as a passport, measure the printed photo yourself. The sheet only handles crop and size; it does not judge face size.
